Southwest Airlines Baggage Policy: Carry-On Baggage, Checked Baggage, Fees

Southwest Airlines Carry-On Baggage

Bringing a carry-on bag on Southwest Airlines will require a space of zero by sixteen by 24 inches, and one personal bag will require a space of 18.5 by 8.5 by 13.5 inches, and must fit underneath the seat in front of you.

Southwest Airlines Checked Baggage

If the luggage is not more than 50 pounds and 62 inches in length, the airline will allow ticketed passengers to check two pieces of baggage free of charge.

 

In the event that your luggage is over 51 pounds and oversized over 62 inches but not over 80 inches, you will have to pay $75.00 per piece (one-way).

Southwest Airlines Excess Baggage

Besides the free baggage allowance specified above, there is a one-way charge of $75.00 for excess baggage not exceeding 62 inches in length, width, and height and less than 50 pounds in weight. If the excess baggage is also overweight or oversized, an excess baggage fee will also apply.

 

Weight and Size Allowance

As long as the bags do not exceed 50 pounds and 62 inches, Southwest will accept the first two checked bags free of charge. Items exceeding 51 pounds and oversized items exceeding 62 inches but not more than 80 inches will be charged $75.00 a one-way fee.

 

Late Check-In

Check your luggage at the ticket counter or curbside at least 45 minutes before scheduled departure. Baggage checked at the curbside less than 45 minutes before scheduled departure will be marked as late.

 

Sports Equipment

A lot of sports equipment bags can be carried on Southwest flights for free and are included with your checked baggage allowance. Your skis, golf bags and surfboards are free on flights within Hawaii. For many other airlines, these items would cost hundreds of dollars to travel with.

There is an excess of weight and/or size (50 pounds and/or 62 linear inches) on sporting equipment.

Items that are restricted and non-restricted

  • There are some restrictions on carrying alcohol in carry-on bags and checked bags. In checked bags, only 100 ml of alcohol is allowed.
  • Southwest Airlines allows antlers, but they must fit under the seat and in the overhead compartments.
  • The carry-on and checked baggage limits do not apply to artificial skeleton bones.
  • Checked bags are allowed to have axes and hatches, but not carry-on bags.
